Preparation
There is no maximum age limit on RocDuMaroc.
It does say a condition: you must be in very good health.
This is not a Sunday ride.
You ride a multi-day mountain bike marathon in a warm climate, with long distances and little compassion.
What do we expect from you?
At least 6 months of focused preparation
Adapted training, nutrition and recovery
A thorough medical check-up with your GP
A Approved medical certificate is mandatory.
Without a certificate = no start number.
So age is not the limitation.
Preparation does.
Yes. You can sign up perfectly solo.
No additional costs. No separate formula.
Overnight stays:
In the bivouac, you sleep in an individual tent (like everyone else).
On take-off and arrival, you will sleep in a double room.
You share it with another solo rider or someone of your choice.
Sleeping alone in a room we don't do.
During the stages:
You are required to ride with a minimum of 2 people.
Not for fun, but for safety.
If anything happens - technical or medical - your co-rider can notify the organisation.
Navigation:
Each participant uses their own GPS.
It must be charged at the start.
“Low battery” is not a strategy.
It is mandatory to rent a SPOT tracker through the organisation. ( more information on this will follow later in the mailings)
For Morocco, you have a valid travel passport ( international passport) necessary. The travel pass must be valid for up to 3 months after the end of the trip.
Cancellation insurance is not compulsory but is VERY STRONG recommended. A fall a few weeks or even days before departure may prevent you from participating at the last minute. If you do not have cancellation insurance, you will lose your registration fee complete. If you do have cancellation insurance, provided you have the right documents, the insurance will reimburse you for the loss suffered.
Everyone participating in RocDuMaroc is mandatory to take out travel and repatriation insurance. For those participating in the race category, specific race insurance is mandatory ( BCOH) As the different stages run through the remote areas of Morocco, it is not obvious to quickly find the right medical help. The risk of a fall is certainly not out of the question during this challenge. One is often exhausted after a few days and this takes its toll. Usually this is remedied with some rest but in case of persistent malaise or after a serious fall resulting in fractures or bleeding, people in these countries are often unable to administer appropriate medical care. The hospitals are not equipped with the same medical equipment that we Europeans are used to. So it is best to be repatriated to Belgium or the Netherlands as soon as possible. Without insurance, this will cost fortunes and a lot of precious time. Good insurance can soon keep your costs to a minimum. For more questions about assistance insurance and/or race insurance, please contact Jowi Reizen (kristl@jowireizen.be).
Brussels Airlines accepts 1 piece of baggage of maximum 20kg / pers. (L + W + H = 158cm) and 1 piece of hand baggage of max. 6 kg / person. However, you won't need more than a few cycling outfits, a few t shirts, long trousers, some spare parts, etc.... We would therefore urge every participant to limit their luggage as much as possible. ( max 20kg ) All the extra kilos you lug yourself on a daily basis. It is not the first time we see participants sweating and puffing after 2 days with their far too heavy luggage.
On site, all sports bags have to be transported almost daily. Lugging 340 bags weighing 20 kg is no fun for anyone. This is no present for yourself either. 20 kg per person will get you a long way. Also be sure to bring no hard case or bring a trolley with wheels. This might get broken due to stacking in the truck. It is best to bring a flexible ( fabric) sports bag. These are light and easy to handle.
As the tents are not meant to store your luggage, it is recommended to bring a plastic protective cover to keep your luggage dry if it rains at night or during the day. Easier still is to opt for a waterproof sports bag.
Since the start is at +/- 1500m altitude, it may be colder than you would expect in Morocco. Nights will also often be chilly...even though it can get up to 30gr during the day. Therefore it is best to bring both thicker and lighter clothing. Several thin layers on top of each other is most interesting.
STRUCTURE IS EVERYTHING
Always consider with everything you bring whether it is stuff you really need. Invest in light and compact camping equipment. Often, the more compact the more expensive. However, it is better not to save too much because a good night's sleep is necessary when testing your endurance and making physical efforts. It is important to pack correctly and logically. Know where you put everything.
Every year, we see participants lugging their far too heavy luggage for a week.

Good preparation is crucial when you want to participate in an extreme mountain bike endurance ( marathon) like this one. Pushing your limits is one thing, but being able to enjoy it is another. When you arrive at the start well-trained, the experience will be all the more intense. It is important that you start your training schedule at least 4 months in advance. 3 to 4 training sessions spread over the week will go a long way. Alternate endurance training (road bike) with resistance and interval training (MTB). Both road rides (min. 3 hours) and off-road trips (min. 1.5 hours) fit perfectly into this training schedule. In the last 5 weeks, the duration per workout best increases from 7h per week to 11h per week.
Each participant must provide a medical certificate before the start in which a doctor states that he/she is physically able to participate in RDM.
An example of this form can be found here
personal medical form RDM 2024 EN
The medical certificate should be forwarded by mail and before 3/8/2024. It may also be delivered to one of our doctors during the info day on 3/8/2024.

Because the slopes often rough and rocky So its best to use a sturdy bike ( MTB) that can take a beating and is in good condition.
A good front suspension is recommended, especially if you want to avoid back problems.
From a full suspension you will get the most benefit and enjoyment out of this terrain.
Be sure to choose tyres with real tread, a good grip and solid sidewalls.
Highly recommended: Vittoria Mzezcal 2.25
At tubeless tyres is much less likely to puncture, the tyre is lighter, one can ride with lower tyre pressure for lower rolling resistance and have good grip on this terrain.

We provide bicycle transport to and from Morocco for all participants who have opted for the all-in package. As a very large load of bicycles has to be transported, the cargo space of the trucks has to be used optimally. The transport boxes must therefore all be the same size to simplify stacking and minimise the risk of damage. Each participant is therefore required to pack his bicycle in a cardboard bicycle box. For this, you can contact us or your local bike dealer. (dim.: 146cmx83cmx21cm)
NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED EXCEPT FOR E-BIKES.
All bikes are collected at a predetermined location in Belgium one week before departure.
Bicycle boxes ordered from us via the personal online file will be delivered on the info day or will be ready at the place where the bikes should be returned 1 week before departure. (cost 20€ each)
Be sure to check out this video where we explain in several steps how to pack your bike.
HOW TO PACK YOUR MTB FOR TRANSPORT
The trucks will be on the road for about 7 days.
Bikes should also be packed in the same bike box for the return journey.
During the event, all bike boxes are folded and stored in our trucks.
SO EVERYTHING THAT WENT INTO THE BOX ON DEPARTURE HAS TO BE TAKEN OUT ON THE SPOT AND PUT INTO YOUR LUGGAGE!
On site, bikes will only be transported by us in the event of irreparable technical damage or if you as a participant are seriously injured and cannot continue riding
We work with Garmin Software during RocDuMaroc.
However, it is possible to use a different brand of GPS. The important thing is that you have to use the gpx files to be delivered the day before departure, can upload on your own device.
We do a final reconnaissance 1 week before the start to check if the slopes are still in good condition. Therefore, we can only send the final gpx files shortly before departure.
Until a few years ago, all files were uploaded locally. That has passed in the meantime.
We do not work with routes but with tracks.
You don't need maps of Africa for this. Only with the Edge 1030 have we noticed problems reading gpx files in the past. An update or installing a cartography sometimes helps with these devices.
Each participant brings his or her own device. One per team is insufficient.
Provide a power pack.
Wcup has been our regular partner for more than 10 years. They supply all energy drinks during and after each stage.
The following products are available at the various CPs:
- sports drink or long distance drink.
- sweet cakes
- candy
- nuts
- water
- fruit
- ors ( where necessary)
After each stage, we provide Wcup recupe drink or Thrive recupe drink. :
What do we not foresee:
- sports drink at the start
- ORS à volonté
It is best to provide 10 extra energy bars yourself. Should you have a dip on the way between 2 CPs or have to wait a long time because of a technical problem.
Breakfast:
- Cafe copain coffee
- fresh Moroccan white bread (no brown bread available)
- sweet topping
- salty toppings
- 2 x omelette
- 1 x pancakes
- yoghurt
- granola or muesli
After every ride:
- pasta bar
- recovery drink Wcup
- recovery drink Thrive
Supper
- starter
- main course
- dessert
En route at checkpoints:
- water
- energy drink Wcup
- fruit
- cakes
- candy
- nuts
- soft drink
- ORS for dehydration symptoms
On site
We provide enough meals, snacks and drinks for everyone during the trip. However, not every participant has the same needs and therefore it is better to provide for yourself extra gels and energy bars provided should you not reach the refreshment point in time or you have technical breakdowns along the way which will quickly deplete your reserves. Extra snacks along the way can come in handy but are not a must. You choose this yourself.
No energy drinks are provided at the start as the extensive breakfast provides sufficient carbohydrates until the first CP.
Know that on average everyone needs about 60gr of carbohydrates per hour during rides. Many more sugars will only cause gastrointestinal problems.
Prepare for the intake of those amounts of carbohydrates already at home.
If you still want some extras at the start or between 2 checkpoints, it is best to bring these in small packs or uni doses.
ORS can be useful in extreme heat and when you know you are losing more fluid than average.
Provide a capacity of at least 3l of water on the bike.
At least four doctors and one nurse travel with us during RocDuMaroc. His provide first aid along the way. Two doctors follow the track of our participants and one doctor or nurse is at a checkpoint. The nurse moves between the bivouac and the checkpoint. In case of illness or accident, the doctor will assess whether further specialised medical help is necessary and whether admission or repatriation is required. The latter is done only in consultation with your insurance company.
MEDICAL AID STATION IN THE BIVOUAC
- Available 24/7
- Treatments are done 15-30 min before breakfast or in the evening before dinner.
- For urgency always on standby in someone
Six bike mechanics always travel with us. They provide technical assistance on the road and in the bivouac. They also bring a stock of spare parts based on the most common bike brands present. However, a basic wrenching technique is required. Replacing a chain or repairing a tyre is something you can do perfectly well by yourself. Our mechanics are there to solve the more complex technical problems.
Because of the sometimes extreme weather conditions, high physical exertion and increased fluid loss, it is not unusual for your body to be quickly exhausted and therefore more prone to gastrointestinal problems, among other things. This can obviously be avoided by proper preparation, appropriate nutrition and at least 6-8 litres of fluids a day. However, if this is not enough and you cannot continue, our doctor in the field will determine the best solution and we will take you to the next bivouac. Depending on your location, this will be by motorcycle or 4×4.
If you like to take a day off because you want to get your bearings, you can ride along in a minibus provided by the organisation.
If you drop out on day 2 due to medical or technical problems, you can continue travelling with us or return home ( at your own expense)
We spend the night mainly in bivouacs. A tented camp ( one double pop up tent per person) with its own catering and shower facilities. These are set up in the most unique and often remote locations. Utilities are not always up to our European standards. Of course, the adventure factor remains important and it is inevitable that in remote locations we sometimes have to compromise on comfort.
The tents we offer are “water resistant”, breathable and meet all the modern standards of a good outdoor pop up tent. Each participant has his/her own tent. Couples sleep together as we provide three-person tents for them. We provide a mattress for each participant. You just provide a mattress cover and a pillow.
The hotel on arrival is comfortable with a typical Moroccan character. Everyone sleeps on the basis of 2-3-4 or 5 person rooms. We always take into account the different teams and personal preferences when dividing the rooms ( sleeping buddy)
Mainly carbohydrate-rich meals will be prepared. This means that many pasta dishes will be served. But rice and potatoes are certainly also on the menu. Protein-rich food such as meat is provided every evening. No separate menus will be prepared. If you are allergic to certain foods, you should indicate this on your medical card. There are gluten and lactose-free alternatives. Please contact the organisation if you have any questions.
Since we are mostly in the middle of the desert, it will be a challenge to find chilled drinks anywhere. On rare occasions, you will come across a small cafe. The question will be whether the drinks will be chilled and not expired for a few months. It's not like they sell masses of drinks there every day. In the bivouac, chilled drinks are always available at the bar.
We have our own power generators in the bivouac. This allows us to work completely autonomously. Sufficient plugs will be provided in the bivouac so that everyone can charge their GPS, mobile phone or bike batteries daily. It is important to write your race number on EVERYTHING!
You won't need much money along the way as we take care of everything. All meals, water, energy and recovery drinks, fruit, biscuits and all overnight stays are included. Coke, Fanta and beer can be bought at the bivouac or at the hotel where we stay. Be sure to bring some cash if you need to buy spare parts for your bike (in case of technical breakdown). If you would like to buy a local drink or a nice souvenir along the way, just bring some extra euros. On day 1, you can then exchange it with us for up to 50 euros per person. In all cities you can also exchange without a problem but as we only return to “civilisation” on day 8, this won't really help you.
Since the challenge mainly takes place in the Atlas Mountains and in Morocco's desert, it is difficult to find souvenirs along the way. On arrival in Ourazazate, you can find some shops but don't expect too much. Also at Errachidia airport, the selection is very limited.
On day 1, everyone can buy a local SIM card + credit from us. This will allow you to make calls and surf. Best is that you provide an extra smartphone per team. You can then use this as a hotspot. The hotels where we stay have free wifi. However, this is often overloaded when everyone checks their social media or e-mails together. Patience is needed anyway if you want to post or share something. You can also buy an e-sim through Airalo or similar. You buy credit online to make calls and surf. Often this can be done for 10€ for 20 days ( 5gb)
In the challenge category, you can participate as a solo rider. No extra costs will be charged. You only sleep in a tent ( like everyone else) provided by us. Both at the start and on arrival, you sleep in a room based on two people. You will therefore share your room with another solo rider or participant of your choice. You will never sleep alone in a room. During the different stages, it is compulsory to ride with a minimum of two people. This way, your co-rider can notify the organisation if you need technical or medical assistance. Each participant uses his own Garmin GPS device. This must always be charged at the start.
Also, every solo rider is required to rent a SPOT tracker through the organisation. ( more explanation on this will follow later in the mailings).

There is no age on a sporting challenge like this. What is important is that you are in very good health and that you are physically sufficiently prepared to participate in a mountain bike marathon. This means that you need to start with an adapted training schedule at least 6 months in advance and that both your diet and living habits are adapted during this period. During the challenge, especially the climate and the gruelling distances will be a big enemy. We therefore also ask every participant to have an extensive medical check-up with his or her GP.

( stan's no tube)
Provide a modified sitting posture allowing you to cover a distance of 85 km a day without any problems.
Don't necessarily choose lightweight but opt for reliability.
